History:
The concept of Project Downtown was introduced to the Windy City during the September 2007 Annual ISNA convention. MSA National hosted the premiere PD event in Chicago during the convention at the Franciscan House of Mary and Joseph on the Chicago's Westside with the intention of spreading the spirit of volunteerism amongst the youth throughout the nation. Young Chicago volunteers continued to provide food, clothing, hygienic items, and smiles to the homeless in this area until January of 2008. In January of 2008, PD moved its location to the Harold Ickes Homes located directly East of Chinatown. Ickes Homes are housing projects with a few thousand residents on the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder. At this point, the vision of {roject Downtown continued to fall into place as the goal became to provide more than just charitible services. This was the base of operation until June of 2008 when the base moved to Masjid Dawah on Lake and Homan Ave. This is one of the most crime ridden communities in Chicago and the mean income in this community is 18,000 a year per family unit. Project Downtown assisted Masjid Dawah in their outreach to the community. Chicago's Project Downtown has slowly evolved and occurs every single weekend of the year providing consistent services to communities in need. Project Downtown has consistently been operating over a 2 year period providing food, clothing, daily items, groceries and smiles all while preserving the dignity of the communities we aid. After continuous warn invitations to stay in these neighborhoods by the residents, the members of the community have become the essence Project Downtown. This movement has been a success largely due to the dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and solely due to the blessings of God, Most High and Exalted... Project Downtown plans to expand it's services from being a charity organization to a movement providing Social Services to the communities we serve just as Muslim's have done throughout history. Over the next few years we plan to provide literacy programs for children, financial planning/management assistance, job seeking assistance, resume writing services, housing services, computer literacy courses and many more with the continued support from God, volunteers, and donors.
